Before Purchasing a Juicer
There are different types of juicers available, and the prices range from $100 to $500. Before you purchase one, there are some things to consider. There are different types for different purposes, so please research well before you decide your perfect one.
Warranty
The warranty for the juicers varies from 1 year to 10 years. Some companies warranty is for 10 years only for the motor, but only one year for all the other small parts. It could get tricky, so please visit their company website to check their warranty rules. Also, read the online customer reviews to see the correspondence and satisfaction of customer service, just in case you may be stuck with broken parts. You want to avoid the situation with getting no answer from the company for the repairing or replacement. It is not worth your money.
Feed Chute (slot) Size
Wide feed chute (slot) is good if you want to eliminate the time to cut the vegetables into small pieces. However, it is harder to juice the leafy vegetables without some waste. On the other hand, narrower feed chute has the advantages of eliminating the contact to oxygen. It also enable you to juice the leafy vegetables without a lot of waste. But It takes a time and effort to cut the vegetables before the juicing, so it is up to you which one suit your style.
My mother bought the fancier juicer, which has the smaller feed chute. She spends about 20 minutes in the kitchen to prepare for juicing. The good part is that it creates less pulp, and the pulp was finer. When she juices the soft leafy items, the result was much better than mine. (It makes less waste.)
I personally do not like spending hours in the kitchen cutting vegetables, so I prefer to have a wide feed chute. My juicer has a wide feed chute, and it takes only five minutes to make juice. Easy process, less stress, and juicing becomes more enjoyable. Only thing is that I feel like I have more waste, especially when I juice the leafy vegetables. Next time I buy a new juicer, I would like to find the one with wide chute with less pulp results.
Speed
Slow juicers supposed to keep more enzymes and vitamins. It also suppose to create less heat when the motor was running. My only concern was that it takes a very long time to make a single serving. In every day juicing, it gets harder if you have to spend in the kitchen for more than 15 minutes.
The major juicer manufacturer, Breville, points out that their juicer is supposed to keep enzymes and other vitamins very well, even though the speed of their juicer is very fast. They are also claiming that their juicers do not heat up much. They also have a fancier kind that enables you to switch the speeds according to the hardness of vegetables. So, take the time and find what you want out of your juicing experience.
Pulp Container
Having the pulp container outside is better for cleaning purposes. (My pulp container is built in the juice fountain, and I have to take all apart to toss some pulp when I‘m making a big batch. ) You can place a plastic bag in the pulp container before juicing, so that you can just take out the bag when you do cleaning.
Price
The price range from $100 to $500. What’s the difference?
It depends on the brand and the type of juicers. Cheap one has more fragile blades, less quality on juicing leafy vegetables, and it may create more waste. It may be less durable that you may have to replace parts over time. If you have the fragile blades, you have to avoid seeds and skin of hard vegetables and fruits. For examples, you may have to
peel the pineapple, or you may have to core the apples. (It should say in the instruction if it is OK to put seeds or hard skin.)
If you have more waste, the cost will add up over time. Even though you seem like saving money by buying the cheaper juicer, you end up with spending more for vegetables over a year.
If you are going for the more expensive one, you may be able to put a whole apple and a chunk of pineapples with skin on it, because the blade is strong. It is nice because you can get more nutrients from skin and core part.
I bought a cheapest Breville fountain type juicer at first, because it was affordable, and I was not sure if I would like the juicing anyway. I have been very satisfied with the result and experience of juicing. Well, I have to say that I am now asking for more.
